In Second Life, one of the virtual-life 'grids', I am Hephaistos Semyorka. Avatars can visit and 'own' property, and can create or purchase anything they wish. I have avatar friends from all over the world--some who have become close friends in real life as well), and have met weekly for seven years in a dedicated Medicine Circle with a small group of people spread across three US states. I built a gallery and exhibit there and at galleries owned by other avatar gallerists and art collectives. The avatar is a very personal expression, and surprisingly intimate relationships can emerge (if you're looking for XXX, you'll find that too).
